A Beautiful Mess: Lawsuits

California sue youI’m a California boy.  Born and raised.  Sorry to all you Washingtonians, I have added to the “infection” of your beautiful state.  Love it or hate it, when you think of California, you think of certain things.  Hollywood.  Beaches.  Lawsuits.  Lawsuits?  Yeah, it’s no secret that California is the “land of the lawsuit.”

This weekend, we look at a very interesting piece of scripture in which the author is really challenging the people to examine their behaviors.  And to recognize how they treat one another and how it affects the community as a whole.  Check out this translation.  Especially look at verses 7-8.

A Beautiful Mess: Yeast

God often speaks in pictures and parables. Perhaps it helps us to understand when we see a picture or hear a story.

One picture that God paints from the very earliest pages of Scripture is the power of yeast. Put yeast in anything and it takes over. It multiplies and divides. A little yeast leavens the whole dough. God used this picture to explain sin to us. Sin in our lives. Sin in a community. It takes over.

Let’s talk about that this weekend as we read from 1 Corinthians 5:1-13.

Hoops of Hope

If you’ve been around Pathways for a little while, no doubt you have heard of Hoops of Hope. The youth group at Pathways has been involved with Hoops of Hope for awhile now, and as a church community its mission is something that we are passionate about. Here are two recent stories that CBS Sports did on Hoops of Hope.

Leadership Crockpot

Leadership Crockpot – It’s what you get when you take people/leaders with different gifts and abilities and toss them into one room to stew together. I’m sure that most of you go here when you read this. Or here. Or here. I’m hoping that you’ll see it more like this. Or this.

This Sunday evening at 7pm in the home of John and Sue Piatt (16529 37th Dr. SE Bothell, WA 98012), anyone who has a heart for seeing the Kingdom of God at work through the Pathways community is welcome to join the stew. I believe that when people with a heart for God and a bias for action join together to use their gifts and skills for his purpose – dangerous things happen!

You are invited…

Stories of Resurrection: Identity

Identity Theft – a new crime? Through the magic of computers, those with less than stellar motives, are able to take on your identity and spend your money – or at least rack up your credit (because most of us don’t have much money to spend anyway). While technology both protects us and makes us vulnerable, I don’t believe that identity theft is new to the 21st century. Let’s talk about that this weekend…

Stories of Resurrection: Doubt

On Easter weekend, we began with this idea – “Every resurrection story must begin with death”. It is an inherent truth that we often overlook that death comes first, but nobody wants to talk about that.

In much the same way, every resurrection story is, at it’s core, about growth and every story about growth must begin with doubt. That is because growth comes out of questions. Questions that leave us with that haunting feeling in our soul until we find sufficient answers. Questions that dig into the root bed of our childhood. Questions that ponder issues that are much bigger than ourselves.

This weekend we are not going to attempt to tackle the infinite number of questions that swarm the universe. Instead, we are going to tell the stories of two people whose doubts encountered the resurrection. My hope is that you will find hope in their story and you wrestle with your own.

Canvas – Pt. 1

As you may know, we are in the midst of a series entitled “A Beautiful Mess.” If you weren’t there on Easter Sunday, we decided to bring all of our “messes” together and create a community mess. Here is what we did.

If you participated, please share your experience with us. If you did not participate, how does this video speak to you?
