Creating Culture: Worship

Opera Singer

Does this picture represent the heart of worship? Is worship a song? Is worship only for those who are musically inclined? What is worship and how is a church to be shaped by it?
Maybe the Apostle Paul gives us a bit of clue when he talks about worship here. I have a passion to see our Pathways community transformed by a culture of worship and of worship and of worship and of worship.

Got any other pictures for me?

I have never understood why we must tie worship to singing or hymns. There are so many other ways to lift ourselves up to God and give thanks. Two of my favorite worshipers today are Pastor Rob Bell and Dr. Cornel West. Although I don’t share all of Dr. West’s views – he does make me think and evokes me to ask God questions and I would count being in communication with God as “worship”. Now, I don’t always hear back, but we are in communication. It may be unilateral at times but it is worship :-) If you have not read Bell or West, do yourself a favor.

Below is a link for some protesters in Los Angeles outside a large investment company protesting/worshiping (who says this is not worshiping) God by pointing out social injustice.

re: the mt shuksan pics … YES, those work just fine :-) . that first one is taken from one of MY favorite outdoor sanctuaries … as for the other one, let’s just say i have been in a position to take that picture, standing on a much safer rock praying fervently that steve’s rock was more solid than it looked while HE would be thanking the Lord he could be where he was ~ thanks dean! :-)

Alex, if worship is defined as “honoring God with your life” then indeed these people are worshiping.

Worship isnt just singing, worship is an expression fo joy. I know it sounds kinda weird, but think about it. Say you see a homeless guy, most people would stay clear of them, but joy is the passion that makes you want to provide for him. THAT is worship. Singing can be worship to, but if there’s no joy you’re just saying empty words. If you don’t have the incredible joy of God, dont bother trying to sing hymns or other praise songs. It just doesnt work! Worship is from the heart, not the mouth.
